Patient Case Overview
Patient was scratched in left eye by fingernail.
Large central epithelial defect with loose epithelium at the edges. VA 20/200 with severe discomfort. Central corneal injury with risk of visually significant scarring. Debridement was not done, Eclipse placed with BCL on top, Maxitrol drops BID with Refresh Optive Sensitive q3h w/a, 5 days later BCL removed, VA 20/40 (due to cataract) with zero discomfort. Full healing with zero scarring.
This case highlights the effectiveness of early regenerative intervention in managing acute corneal trauma. Despite a large central epithelial defect and high risk of scarring, treatment with Eclipse and supportive therapy enabled rapid epithelial recovery without the need for debridement. The patient achieved full healing with no scarring and complete symptom relief, demonstrating the ability to preserve visual outcomes even in high-risk central injuries.
